Garage Door Springs
Garage Door Company Can Replace or Adjust Springs
Crucial to any garage door installation are the springs. Depending on which model garage door you choose, our experienced Plano TX garage door company will install either torsion or extension springs. Springs are under high tension and the National Safety Council warns consumers that only qualified individuals should adjust garage door springs. The expert technicians at Action Garage Door are ready to provide reliable, prompt service in Austin, Houston, Dallas and surrounding Texas cities!
Torsion Garage Door Springs
Torsion springs are mounted on a metal tube on the wall above the garage door. Drums on either side of the tube are designed to roll up the cable and lift the garage door. The springs unwind and lose power as the door rolls overhead. The rate at which this happens to the torsion spring is called inch pounds per turn (IPPT).
The IPPT of each spring is based on the height of the door, weight of the door, radius of the tracks and radius of the drums. In order for your garage door to be balanced and work property, the springs must be carefully set according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Most manufacturers distribute 10,000-cycle springs with new garage doors, meaning, you should be able to open and close your garage door 10,000 times before any springs break.
Action Garage Door recommends replacing stock 10,000-cycle springs with a galvanized extended-life 25,000-cycle spring that we warranty for life. Our garage door service and repair company offers some of the most reliable warranties and services in the business.
Garage Door Extension Springs
Experienced garage door technicians like those here at Action Garage Door also work with two types of extension spring systems. First, there are extension springs for sectional garage doors that open straight up and curl overhead in four or five sections. These springs are mounted from the ceiling support above the horizontal track and extend toward the opening as the door closes. This extension system uses pulleys to route a cable from each side of the door to the spring and back to the track. As your door closes, the springs stretch toward the door opening.
The second type of extension spring is found on one-piece garage doors. A one-piece door swings outward as rolls up and overhead. On either side of the garage door opening, about waist high, extension springs are mounted to a lever and bracket system that extends the springs toward the ceiling as the door closes. This type of system is dangerous, which is why it is no longer manufactured. If you have a one-piece garage door with a broken extension spring, we recommend door replacement for safety and durability.
